Very unhappy with our meal. Tiny margaritas were $7 and the food was nothing but over spiced, poorly assembled elements. I couldn't even finish my fish taco and they used to be awesome. Our whole meal was $35 in a town where we rarely exceed $25 for lunch. I preferred the old LaLuz. They've overgrown their britches. The only asset I see is that they have a good patio.

Great drinks and good food. Very nice host, bartender and manager. Try the mezcal, cherry infused, smoky margarita. Best mezcal drink in all the land.

They have a salsa bar with a rather interesting (good) selection of salsas that are outside of what you usually see. The orange one (hot) mixed with the mild was our favorite. The roasted chile variety was something to try as well. I ordered a quesadilla that was enormous. The filling was as one would expect, but the tortilla was excellent. My husband ordered a steak and chicken burrito that we could have easily shared. We beat the late lunch rush, so it was pretty empty inside, but service was good.

The drinks were great. We had an El Jefe and El Hefe Tall. Both were amazing margaritas that gave me a buzz after one. We also had tacos and chalupas. They came with queso blanco which I'm not a fan of; it was kind of "fancy" Mexican and I prefer more straight forward home style Mexican. It was extremely affordable though, the staff was friendly, and the salsa was yummy!

Good food, quiet, but busy atmosphere. Was there about 5 on a Friday, no problem getting a table, and the wait for food wasn't long.

    Mediocre gentrified burritos.

Very good food and service. Nice decor. Casual and very comfortable. Will definitely come back next time we are in Ft Collins.

What better to eat after a day spent beer tasting in Fort Collins? I'm talking carb-loading on tortilla chips, La Luz is tasty spot for Colorado-style Tex Mex food in a cute part of town. Pros: friendly servers; reasonable prices. Fun salsa bar (if you order the chips & salsa) -- the medium hot salsa was a crowd pleaser! Their ingredients are super fresh, and their menu states that they purchase many ingredients locally (bonus points!). A couple of people at our table ordered the carne aside street taco, and that was by far the tastiest of the group! The fish tacos were a close second. My friend and I enjoyed our burritos, but I would probably go with a selection of street tacos next time (personal preference? they just were more flavorful). The burritos are HUGE and definitely enough for leftovers the next day. Cons: By far the longest I've had to wait for food in a long time -- over 30-40 minutes for our group of four, in which we ordered 2 burritos and 5 street tacos total. No special requests, and the restaurant wasn't all that busy. Also, they got my order incorrect (gave me a fish burrito instead of shrimp), but it was still delicious and not worth saying anything about (especially considering the wait)! This is also the sort of place that charges for their chips and salsa (I hate when sit-down Mexican restaurants do that), but they were of course delicious! And if you check-in on Yelp, you get a free order anyway! I don't know Fort Collins super well but have been up here about 5 different times for beer tasting. La Luz is a nice break from the bar food & burger options that otherwise seem to dominate the town. And, they're open on Sundays, when a lot of other places seem to be closed.

Pretty disappointing all around. I tried 3 tacos, the shrimp one, the asada, and the beef tongue. The only one with good flavor was the shrimp, the others were muddled in flavor. The mild salsa on the bar tastes like marinara, yuck. The medium was delicious though. The service was pretty bad. Not very busy, but waited a long time to get our order taken, and probably 30+ minutes for tacos and a salad. It just wasn't good enough to make me want to go back. Still looking for good tacos in Ft Collins.

It's been 3 years, and I have had this place on my mind! I really have been longing for the fish burrito I love and cannot recreate! So I was so surprised when we went there for dinner and found that now it's not a hole-in-the-wall place, but an actual restaurant now with a hostess and bar! Fortunately, we did not have to wait to be seated at a nice booth inside. I was pleased to find that the menu had not changed. I ordered my infamous fish burrito, and it was just as I remembered it. My boyfriend got their steak burrito and loved it. They actually lost our ticket, and brought us complimentary chips, a free beer, and dessert. Honestly, we couldn't have had a better experience, our waiter was wonderful, and it was all reasonably priced. To top it all off, I ordered take out from there the next night and it did not dissappoint! I got the same exact thing :) No lie, this was the happiest meal of my entire trip back to FoCo.

The tacos didn't really have flavor. Everyone liked the salsa bar. It's an ok spot to get something light when about in Old Town but better options out there.

La Luz has really great food for a great price. Its very casual and has a nice little patio. The portions are really huge, especially because most meals run about $7-9. The salsa bar is small but really well done, and tastes very fresh. The fish plate is one of my favorites and is enough for 2 servings unless you're starving. This is one of my go-to places in town. Well done!

My wife is broken-hearted. After an initial visit, this was shaping up as her favorite restaurant in Fort Collins, until today's visit when I discovered a hair in my burrito. We were only one bite in on our burritos, and explained to the waiter that we weren't comfortable continuing. He brought a check to the table for our soft drinks and chips, which seemed reasonable to him I suppose, since we consumed them...but I was a little put off being presented with any kind of check. Two stars only because we had a previous good experience.

Great service. Just fantastic fish and carnitas tacos. Marvelous house Margs! Service was fantastic. Salsa bar makes me drool - at home. Not at the bar. Lovely outdoor seating. Great atmosphere. We will definitely be back!

The food was very good and the prices were excellent. We would suggest the potato burrito which had both chicken and steak, also at our one person had the Gourmet Steak and the Atomic. We must also suggest the churro which is a good dessert for four.

This place is FANTASTIC. I've been with bigger groups and they are always accommodating. The happy hour deals are awesome - I got two (huge!) chicken tacos for $5, and a craft beer for $2. The margaritas are also great! My friends and I love this place and would recommend it to anyone!

After reading Yelp reviews of a variety of restaurants, we chose to check out La Luz tonight for our first night on vacation! It definitely did not disappoint! I had a chicken gourmet burrito and it was fabulous! (And HUGE!) I loved every minute of it! My brother got the steak tacos and said that they too were phenomenal! I loved that the water was served in tequila bottles, it just made the entire experience fun! It was a fun atmosphere, upscale Mexican food and super casual and fun! The staff were great, the location was adorable and the food was incredible! If only I could bring it back with me to Des Moines!

I'm not sure what happened to this place but since the move I haven't had a good experience here with the food... The people who work here are great but sadly that's about it. I've been in probably half a dozen times since the move and for some reason I always leave highly dissatisfied... My favorite dish was always the potato burrito fully loaded, but for some reason now they always undercook their potatoes, every time! They used to be fairly crunchy, now they seem nearly raw... So I switched to their tacos, trying each one, and something is just off... I used to love this place, not sure what happened... One things for sure, they really lack consistency...

Not too shabby. Cheap and decent food. Have I had better? Yes. But I've only been once and my experience overall was a good one. The staff was very friendly, the food got out relatively quick, and the margs were a little on the sweet side (I prefer sour), but decent.

Amazing salsa bar! Great drinks! Awesome drink specials! Really good food, and it is highly personable. I enjoy the service and the atmosphere. By far my favorite restaurant in Old Town

It's with a sad heart I give La Luz 2 stars, maybe 2.5. I have been going to La Luz since they opened over a decade ago and when in Fort Collins I stop in for a burrito, but maybe no longer. I was there 6 months ago and I would have given it 4-5 starts. But my experience the other day was not good. Changes are happening there and not for the better. Even my friends that live in town said the Boardwalk location is better. I was happy with the change to a bigger space and adding a bar, but I want my burrito to be wrapped in foil so I can get my hands around it and dig in. It also stays moist. My large burrito came on a plate looking like a white submarine. It was not easy to pick up or cut in to and made a big white mess on my plate and also was very low on chicken. I still love your salsas and if they were bottled to go I would buy them.

Our server was not familiar with Yelp, so the check in offer caused a little bit of confusion. However, once we got that straightened out, we had a great time at La Luz! The fish tacos were tasty and really reasonably priced, as were the margaritas. The salsa bar was perfect - I think we made at least three trips there. I'm not in FoCo all that often, but if I were, I could see myself becoming a regular here!

Cool place and good food. Stopped in on the last leg of our road trip to Denver. Fish tacos for me, wife had chicken enchiladas. Both were good. Nice flavor profiles and good portions, and fish tacos were very traditional. Very friendly and accommodating service although it seemed a little off/inconsistent for a full service joint to tell you to serve yourself one of the salsas from the salsa bar, although the counter argument to that is you can check them all out and decide yourself. Wife wasn't sure what margarita she wanted, and ended up getting one a little too sour for her taste, and our waitress sweetened it up for her. Very cool. Nice atmosphere and our waitress kept the kids engaged by telling them to find the Waldo hiding somewhere in the restaurant.

Wonderful light and healthy mexican food! I'm a big fan of the fish tacos!! Guacamole was good, but would be better without giant pieces of tomato. Tortillas were great! I will be back to try more of the menu out for sure!!

I've only been here once, but I wasn't disappointed. I had the chicken pesto burrito and it was delicious. The service was great and they also have some really good beer to choose from. I had the Odell's IPA. I'll definitely come back here the next time I'm in Ft. Collins.

I've eaten more than my share of La Luz food over the years, and It's always been excellent. Their breakfast burritos are an awesome way to start the day, and their fish tacos are one of my favorite lunches. The salsa bar is one of the best in the region, and I enjoy making my own blends to suit my mood. Enjoying their patio on a warm evening with a basket of fresh chips & salsa (and a local brew!) is a rite of summer.

We had breakfast on the patio. What an awesome and unique breakfast experience. I had the Chili Relleno Omelet with green chili and Chorizo. Absolutely fantastic. My wife had the Eggsadilla with bacon (Breakfast quesadilla) My son had the huge breakfast burrito and his girlfriend had the Breakfast Nachos. Everything was great and service was top notch. Very pleased with our breakfast choice.

Staff is very friendly and place is clean but the food is more like fancy Chipotle not real mexican food. I did enjoy the salsa bar they had where you can sample different kinds but most likely I will stick to something more authentic Mexican next time.

La Luz on walnut is an enigma. Every time I go in the food is different. Yet, I still go. I wouldn't currently recommend their tacos because they can't seem to figure out what type of tacos define them. Since they moved, the tacos went from over-priced street taco style (yum) to over priced american taco style (blah). One thing, however, is simply amazing: the carnitas quesadilla with spinach added to it. This is the reason I go here. Do yourself a favor and try it. And get a coin marg with it - you only live once. P.S. If the manager of the place happens to read this: for the love of God, please make a spicy salsa. There is nothing more disappointing than loading up at a salsa bar only to find out that their extra hot salsa is about as potent as 3.2 beer.

This place was a great fast casual place. Oh wait it still is mon thru fri from open till five. Then it transforms into a bar with table service from five pm to 2 am. Then on the second Friday of the third month during a waxing moon...wait what happened here? This place has totally lost its identity. Is it fast casual or dining, well it's not doing either one good, so it better do something fast. This place has relocated and in the process lost all of its charm and character. What once was a good fast casual dining experience is now struggling to do fast casual sometimes and table service the other. Their food has always been great for fast casual and the price but it is nowhere good enough for table service. The food didn't seem as good as in the past. Our order arrived at light speed, before we got half way through our chips and salsa. There was no hint of seasoning or char grilling on the scant amount of steak I recived. The table service we received was weak. Our chips and salsa came in a plastic basket with wax paper which you expect for their fast casual setup. Then the salsa came in a clashing fancy ceramic dish (this was new). Cutlery for the table service was paper napkin wrapped not clothed. A fancy tequila bottle was left on our tabel for water. However our water glasses were chipped mason jars and we ran out of water and never received more. Our burritos were served with a radish on top of a bed of lettuce. I though the radish might be pickled; nope just a radish on top of lettuce. Was that suppose to be a platting? The burritos were so stuffed they started to fall apart. The only time the waitress appeared besides taking our order and money was when she offered us tin foil so we could re wrap our desintagrading burritos. According to her it's common. I like good food but I'm not a snobby jerk just wanting to hate on a place. I don't mind plastic trays with wax paper, mason jars or paper napkins but none of this was put together well.

Out of all the places to enjoy a meal or go out for drinks, to this one takes the cake. Being a Mexican food fanatic, the street tacos always satisfy me. Generally fast and easy, with delicious food this place gets hard to beat. With a self serve salsa bar and half off tequila shots on Tuesdays, the only thing that makes this place better is the amazingly attentive staff. All the meals I've had here were hot and delicious, and the bartenders are all very knowledgeable in their top shelf tequila selections. La Luz is the place you go with an old friend where your only expectation can be good food, a casual atmosphere, and amazing staff. While gourmet may not be their specially, and food may be served in a plastic basket with wax paper, it's perfect that way. Why change a fast and delicious thing? My only struggle with this place is the seating can be confusing at times, for example.... most meals, you are seated by a host. The exception is lunch, you walk in and directly order from the kitchen and then sit down. But I figured that out quickly.

Almost immediately after registering my distress over a service problem at La Luz on Yelp I was contacted by their manager, Ashley. She graciously apologized for my experience, reimbursed me for lunch, and sent me a gift certificate for dinner. I wasn't looking for a freebie, but her quick, genuine response is a real credit to the restaurant. She assured me that the problem has been addressed. Mistakes are human, but it's what you do with them that matters. I'm looking forward to going back to La Luz. As I told Ashley, I love Ft. Collins, I love Old Town, and I'm a big supporter of local businesses.

  • Logan V.

Service was awful. Our waters were empty through our entire meal. I was never asked if I wanted a second beer when my first was emptied well before our food was served. The poorly-wrapped Atomic Del Mar burrito didn't make up for it. Will be going down the street to Illegal Pete's next time.

  • Amy O.

Our cab driver told us they had breakfast. What we didn't know was that on weekdays they only serve two breakfast taco options. That would have been fine but the lady at the register was a bit rude. "Veggie or bacon?" She said. "What?" I asked. She repeated. No "How are you?" blah blah. Just a poor experience. Tacos weren't that great but the price matched the taste.

Decent Mex in town that should offer more quality. OK Margarita, so-so salsa, the entrees were only slightly better than average. A bit pricey for pedestrian food, though the room was very comfortable and the service attentive.

Came up to Fort Collins to tour the Budweiser brewery and decided we wanted Mexican afterwards. After looking around online we found La Luz. I was drawn in by the picture of what I believe was the fish tacos, so we decided to try it. I liked the restaurant and lighting, but NOT the menus. I don't find paper menus very impressive. At least a laminated sheet would have been better. The tequila list and drink list was waaayyy fancier. The waiter asked if wanted chips and salsa, we said yes. He brought the chips and a small bowl on the plate and said the salsa bar was in the back of the restaurant. The salsa, personally, tasted like Pace Picante salsa. After looking over the menu there were a couple items that I was interested in. I got the chicken fajita burrito and wasn't very impressed. It was exactly like something I make at home. It came out on a small white plate with lettuce and radishes next to it. Why? I do not know. I would have liked some sort of side with it, but it was a very big burrito so it's understandable. When I bit into this massive burrito I got undercooked rice and a taste of oil. The menu said it had guacamole in it, but mine had VERY LITTLE. And the cilantro rice had no taste of cilantro at all. It wasn't a bad burrito but I was expecting something a little bit more...flavorful? Higher end? The picture of the fish tacos through me off. If I was in Fort Collins again and wanted Mexican I would come back and try a different menu item.

I've been to La Luz now a handful of times, both for lunches and dinners... And I've never been super impressed. Yes, their margaritas are good and there is a good variety of salsas, but beyond that is pretty mediocre. I've tried their fish tacos as well as their shrimp tacos and felt that the flavors didn't go very well with the fish or shrimp. Both were underwhelming. Maybe if they marinated the meat differently? I don't know. My husband, on the other hand, loves this place so I guess it evens out to the 3 stars.

If I want fish tacos I always come here and have done so for years! Today was my first visit to the new downtown location... Much better than it's old location and with a full bar! The south location is great as well, but you can't beat the Old Town feel! Oh and Sunday breakfast burritos are great as well!

  • Samantha D.

The street Tacos are delicious and satisfying and the shrimp quasadilas was simple and satisfying. The addition of a self serve salsa bar was great and each had its own unique delicious taste. The margaritas are also amazing and a bit strong.

I think it's safe to say this is quite possibly the most solid choice for a quicker but damn delicious lunch in the old town area. The menu here is simple but good-burritos and quesadillas, with carnitas, pork, steak-all the regular staples. I went with a steak quesadilla and it was super delicious-absolutely stuffed with steak, to the point that it's falling out. Not that there's anything wrong that with! It was seasoned perfectly and had just a little bite. Their happy hour is fantastic-on Tuesday and Saturday from 4-close, they offer $2 New Belgium pints from tap-that's right, not some shrimpy HH beer, but a full New Belgium pint. Score! They've got a few other beers on tap, all good choices. The cherry on top is the staff, who are all super chill and friendly. The dining area is also quite nice, including some high tops against the window for people watching. I'm a big fan of La Luz, and I think I'll make it a regular stop whenever I'm in FoCo.

The breakfast here is awesome. Total twist on brunch, positioned right next to Silver Grill so it's pretty busy with the overflow. I gave it four stars instead of five because the food does come out slow.

Service and drinks: 5 stars Food: 4 stars Casey, our server, was awesome! So informative, enthusiastic and welcoming for our first visit to La Luz. We were there for Margarita Monday. Margs were good - tart, but clean. We both had the El Jefe and felt the value exceeded the price. Shrimp street tacos were amazing. Steak tacos were passable. Probably won't order the steak again, but will definitely be back. Loved the salsa bar, the service and the atmosphere.

  • Denise D.

Really delightful eatery with excellent service. I highly recommend the spinach black bean quesadilla, the carnitas quesadilla, and the carnitas tacos- all were fresh and delicious. We were tempted by the fish tacos, but they really couldn't specifically answer our questions about the source of their tilapia, so we passed on those. The carne asada taco was delicious as was the lengua taco which my son dared to try. It was spicy, but he gave it a thumbs up. As flatlanders, we also really appreciated the continuous replenished charming water bottles (recycled glass wine and bar bottles) poured into "jelly jar" glasses!

  • Leah B.

My husband and I drove down from Cheyenne to try this place. The atmosphere and customer service were great. The food was delicious, but in the end I felt something was missing. Like there was not much on the plates of food we received. I figured for being a mexican food restaurant that the portions would be bigger. In the end, we enjoyed our meal. The only complaint my husband and I have is that the booth seating is very small. For an average size person it was very tight. You could hardly move. I can see why other patrons chose to sit at tables instead.

It was okay. Not the experience everyone says it is. The tacos are overpriced and aren't that great. The service was really bad. We waited an hour and a half for our food to come. Meh. Pass.

I worked at la Luz forever! It's the one place I worked and still love the food! It's clean and very very tasty. Try the Chile Relleno burrito add some Carnatis or the fish tacos! Or have both.

Worst experience I have ever had a so called restaurant . Was greeted by the hostess with we have no open tables, here is a menu, you can sit at the bar. I sat at the bar for 10 minutes without a hello, or even an offer for a drink. There were 15 employees in a place that only has a capacity of 40. Used to frequent the old way if la luz. Lack of good staff and no management. I will not be back ever. All hopes that owners of this establishment read this and get there heads out of there asses and hire a better staff.

Started with the guacamole which was good and fresh. The big winner was the tilapia fish tacos. OH MY GOD they were the best in Fort Collins. The fish tasted fresh and the filling made it delicious. This is J-Sun endorsed.

Great food. Their fish tacos are probably the best in town. The new location provides a bit more space and makes this more of an evening option. Great, inexpensive pic for fresh Mexican. Their margaritas are also pretty good - not too sweet.

The food was good. I got a potato burrito with chicken, mainly because it's one of the few options without black beans. It was good and a good size too. The prices are good. The atmosphere is hipster now. If you are bigger than a size six you may want to sit at a table, as the booths don't comfortably accommodate moderately large people. Overall I wish that it would have stayed the same, and not just because I miss Rasta something terrible. We may go back, but it won't be in the frequent stop rotation.

Always good. Super cool atmosphere. Cheap breakfast burritos during the week. You have to pay for chips which is ridiculous, but the salsa bar is great. Super good food.

Pesto chicken burrito had amazing chicken. Wish there was more chicken, less rice and beans though. Most people had their small children when I went with them so seemed family friendly. Margarita was very good ... plenty of tequila. Tortilla chips were over-salted for my taste. Al pastor tacos my husband had were excellent! Will definitely be back for an easy meal!

Passing thru Fort Collins, old town shopping district. The food in the restaurant caught our eye thru the window. Looked at the menu and they had good prices. Chicken quesadilla was delicious and a large serving. It comes with side of sour cream, guacamole, and fresh tomato salsa. Fish burrito was huge and tasty. If you get the chips there are a few types of salsa you can choose from at the salsa bar.

My family and I went there a while back and we didn't have a good experience. Well I am happy to report that we did give it a second chance and it was much better. I would recommend eating there. I would still love to try their breakfast burritos.

Ok first off..love the like retro lights on bar. Bartender was very friendly and both knowledable and fast. Can we talk seafood burrito? Or Fish taco's..and kill me for the best churo's in choc. Sauce I've ever tasted. And Heather the bartender made some kind of spicy martini...LOVE IT...and who would think tequila and hot chocolate. I tasted some of the smoothest tequila ever. All in all, I've now been back many times. Prices are great. Check it out.

The balsamic lemonade was fantastic! I wanted something non-alchoholic and in the past, lemonade has been too bitter, and made my tongue all gritty. But this was fantastic! It had the perfect amount of lemony sweetness without my tongue feeling like sawdust. And the burritos! My goodness, okay my boyfriend and I used to be all up in the mexican food. Qdoba here, Cafe Mexicali every day the occasional burrito from Chipoltle but a month ago I had a really bad experience with it and so we strayed away from those places. I got the garden burrito with chicken, they didn't put a lot in it but it was good that way, so much flavor. Hip fort collins mexican has nothing on this place, let me tell you! And they actually have healthy food here. It's so hard to find healthy mexican food! This place has it. The service is excellent, everyone is always smiling and asking you how it is. The flavors were so fantastic. This place is where it is AT!

The main thing I have to say is this: BREAKFAST TACOS!!! No ladies and gents, I didn't sub "tacos" for "burrito". La Luz actually has breakfast tacos, and they're quite delicious. Not quite like down in Tejas, but pretty darn good, especially with the green salsa on top. They're even better considering you can't find breakfast tacos up here. To top it off, the atmosphere was cozy, the service was very friendly, and they leave a water decanter at your table (long story, but when a place does this, I give mad props). I'll be sure to stop here again the next time I'm in Ft. Collins for breakfast, as the rest of their menu looked great too. As a note, if your Yelp map shows this place next to a lake, that is incorrect. The address is correct though.

We tried La Luz for the first time a few weeks ago before going to a concert at Hodi's. We had never been to the old location but I'm wishing we had from the reviews! My margarita was extremely sour and not in a good way but a very unbalanced, needs some serious tweaking way;) The menu was a bit difficult to follow when ordering dinner plates. I ordered guacamole with my meal and got a spoon full for a $1. The red sauce on my fish enchilada could use some retuning. My boyfriend got a burrito with beef and potatoes in it and he really liked it. Service was just ok. We were kind of on a timeline going to the concert after and it definitely took longer than expected. We sat at a high top table near the bar and the bartender wasn't quite as attentive as he could have been as it was a Wednesday evening and not terribly busy. We may give it one more try but our hopes aren't too high. It's unfortunate because the restaurant is in a cool location and I hope they get things together soon!

Decided to catch a little dinner in Ft Collins area and stumbled upon this rad little taco joint.. First off.. phenomenal service.. I believe his name was Brian.. Any way he was excellent.. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of coin margaritas, which were excellent.. We helped ourselves to the salsa bar and then ordered some tacos.. I had the Lengua and pescado.. Both extremely flavorful and fresh.. Great atmosphere and again I can't say enough about the service.. Pretty sure on our way out every person thanked us for coming in.. Will most definitely be back..Wowza!

Whenever I come back to La Luz I have to stop and ask myself why I ever eat anywhere else. Service is fast (obviously a little slower if it's hoppin' in there). Salsa bar is great. The food is an awesome balance of tastes good / doesn't make you want to murder yourself out of calorie guilt when the whole thing's said and done. Really super tasty. I suggest anything with fish in it, though the "Salsa Blanca" (read: repurposed sour cream) is sure to add some calories. Amazingly delicious calories. Fish tacos are a staple, fish fajita burrito is magical, and the fish salad is enough for dinner for two (and therefore usually what we get and split.) The blackish salsa is pretty tasty, and I can eat the mild red one like soup (onions and tomatoes galore!) The breakfast they serve on weekends is one of the healthier options in town. The breakfast burritos they have during the week are pretty much your average breakfast burrito (egg, potato, cheese, optional meat on flour). I could care less about those. But the weekend breakfast menu is awesome. I got the fajitas omelette with chorizo and potatoes and black beans on the side. It was pretty much perfect. Plus they had the full salsa bar available in the am! Skip the line at Silver Grill and try this place out for your Saturday morning eats. Pro Tip: They have pretty decent margaritas, and they're significantly cheaper than those at The Rio (though maybe not as strong).

Now a full service restaurant. But the prices are still good as is the salsa bar. The black bean spinach quesadilla are always good as is the local beer selction. However, the fish tacos here make this a go to choice in Old Town.

Awesome new space. Can get crowded but that's how you know it's good! Decent beer selection but fantastic food. I like to be able to order just one taco instead of getting multiple tacos that I end up dumping in the trash. Mild sales is outstanding so make sure you get chips. Side of rice was perfection. The GM was there this evening and was a really great all around person.

Yummy! Great food for a very reasonable price! The guacamole was excellent and my kids loved the steak tacos. All staff was very friendly and attentive. Great place in Old Town to sit on the patio and enjoy the atmosphere. Will definitely eat here again!

Good place! The Jefe Tall margarita is definitely better than the "original" one that's on the menu. The original was way too sweet for me. Everyone at my table ordered a burrito and everyone was please. I had the potato and steak burrito. It was yummy and is calling my name again, however...this is so not Mexican food. Sure, they use some things out of the Mexican food category then doll them up Fort Collins/white style. None the less, it was good! Salsa bar is cool with a variety of salsas to try!

Worst Mexican food in town, slow rude service, from the owner as well! It took 30 minutes to get an order of fish tacos, that weren't even hot. I will not waste my money here again.

The food at La Luz is DELICIOUS, and healthy! I love the $3.00 breakfast burritos on weekdays, and the migas on weekends. If you've ever had breakfast in Austin, chances are you've had a plate of migas. La Luz version is as good as I've found in Austin. For lunch, I love the fish tacos, (the most heart healthy of all) veggie green chili, and guacamole. I also enjoy the fish salad as well as the rice and beans. yummm..... On a cold winter day, La Luz warms my soul. I love watching the steam rise off a boiling pot of tomatoes and the bean pot bubbling over. Great food creates great memories and I have a journal full of them from La Luz.

The chips and salsa is well worth the $2. So good. The rest of the salsa bar is fantastic and the tacos are all good. I have had the shrimp taco which had a good amount of shrimp. But my FAVORITE THING in the restaurant is the primavera taco. I LOVE it. I think it's even vegetarian and I'm no vegetarian, but it is delicious. I don't even know what's in it. It doesn't matter, just get it. The el Jefe marg is fab as well. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because every time I've been, especially when I sit at the bar, there are always flies! Like quite a few, on your table and food. It's kind of gross. But the remodel is lovely and the whole atmosphere is great.

Formerly, this was our go-to quick, quality, inexpensive place to grab great fish tacos and burritos. The last time we went, they had moved next door to a great location in the corner of the building with a fenced patio and much more room overall. To our surprise, they converted to a full-serve restaurant. Although I was disappointed because we came there to grab something inexpensive quickly before a movie, I left very satisfied. They still have great food and delicious salsa and are not too expensive. Although I will pay a little more, I'll enjoying dinning in at La Luz and it's still one of my best picks in the Fort.

What is up with Fort Collins? Seems like they have to have at least two of the same restaurant. Same goes for La Luz.. There is one her in Oldtown and one in south Fort Collins. Since I am more partial to Oldtown, this is the location I picked. La Luz is a Mexican restaurant that is more or less healthy than some other Mexican restaurants you can choose here in town. I got the fish tacos which aren't too bad at all! They come with fish(hah!), cabbage, sour cream and other goodies on it. The flavor is a bit unusual but very tasty! They have a great salsa bar too! I got little cups of almost all of their different salsas and thought that the corn salsa was probably my favorite. It went very well with the tacos! I polished it off with Negro Modelo which tasted oh so good with the meal. They make huge burritos! My partner, Steven had one and he enjoyed it, the little bite that I had was good! The atmosphere is cool, simple but cool and the staff is very nice and does their best to get you your meal ASAP. I definitely recommend going to the La Luz in Oldtown. I can't discredit the other La Luz but if you want more character the Oldtown location is probably the best choice.

If you havent had the fish tacos at La Luz you are missing out! I am a FL girl and these things beat anything we have back home. I feel like I have now lived! Fish was super fresh and flaky, didnt smell or taste fishy at all. The corn tortillas are amazing, also very fresh tasting. And the SALSA! The salsa, I think it was their mild, was wonderful. Very thick and full of fresh veggies. This place is going on my frequent visit list!

Burritos are unremarkable, and no better than Chipotle in quality. Mostly beans and rice with a little meat. The selection of salsas in the salsa bar was nice. I liked being able to try multiple salsas with burrito.

Pretty good healthy mexican food. I ordered the veggie tacos, and the portions were pretty hefty so two tacos was enough. My tortillas were nice and soft which I really enjoyed. However, my friends and husband ordered the plates instead which came with tortillas. The tortillas these plates came with were falling apart and hard. I don't know why there was a difference between their tortillas and mine; they were both corn tortillas. My friend ordered the chicken plate and she absolutely loved the chicken. I think next time I'll order some sort of meat dish.

margaritas - off the charts. finally a restaurant that uses tequila and not just sour mix. ridiculous salsa bar, even a partnership with New Belgium on one of the salsas. I will be back next time I go to Fort Collins.

Came here for lunch during the week. It was a bit of a late lunch so we had the place practically to ourselves. I ordered a potato burrito with carnitas -- yum! I wish more Mexican places did potato burritos. My friend had a quesadilla. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. Nothing really special but a good local alternative for Mexican fast food.

When talking about food and restaurants with people, sometimes my mind jumps right into word association. Someone says "The Rio" and I think margaritas. We talk about burritos and I think of Big City. Someone says something about Fish Tacos and I think of La Luz. The chips are pretty good and we all plowed through a basket trying out the different salsas and got a second basket for free. Their mild corn salsa was nothing to write home about. It was bland and not my favorite. Their mild tomato salsa was pretty good, nice and sweet, almost tasting like marinara. I really liked this one. The salsa fresca was good too with a nice balance of heat and spice. And surprisingly, I even like their fiery chipotle salsa (which is saying something for someone who it spice wimpy). It had a great flavor and it wasn't so hot that it burnt your taste buds in the process. My fish tacos with grilled fish, salsa blanca, cheese, onion, shredded cabbage, salsa fresca, guacamole and lime all folded into soft corn tortillas were finger-licking heaven. The flavors are fresh and fantastic, the fish not too fishy, a nice crunch from the cabbage and the acidity of the tomato and the lime really pull it all together. These are some incredibly messy tacos with juice dripping everywhere, but that's part of what makes them so delicious. Clearly, these are some fish tacos that give reason to the "Legendary" title. It's unbelievable how healthy foods made so well can taste amazing.

I've been a quasi-regular patron at La Luz for the last two years, and have had only five star experiences here. Now, understand me, I've read some of the complaints by other customers, and they could very likely be real issues. I have no idea. ...And why not, you ask? Simple: I have ONLY ever ordered the fish tacos or the fish salad. Seriously, these two items represents my biggest happiness in Fort Collins. The fish is always fantastic, and the salad components are always fresh. The fish tacos put every other restaurant in Fort Collins to shame. To shame, I say!!! When I'm in the mood for healthy Southwestern fare, La Luz is always my first thought. [And, well, sometimes the Rainbow!]

Years ago, I went to La Luz and had a bad experience, so I haven't been back in years. Then one day I had a craving for a burrito but didn't want to get in my car and drive from old town. So, here I was a La Luz... Glad I came back. Food is fresh, veggies are crisp, and all that good stuff. The salsa bar isn't bad, but the "hot" salsa still isn't that spicy. I did do a breakfast burrito -- didn't really do it for me, I think they prepared them in advance and the shell was a bit stiff. While I love having this place so close to my house (that's it's differentiation for me), I still could replace LaLuz with Qdoba, Matador, etc. and get about the same experience. How can a burrito place really separate itself from the pack?

    (3)
  • Debbie C.

Excellent fish tacos. Most other items I've ordered have been very good, but the fish tacos are outstanding. The counter service is always fast and friendly. I've never had anything but very fresh ingredients in anything I've ordered from La Luz, and I've been a regular for about 8 years. I usually go to the South College location near JC Penney. Why not 5 stars? The last two times I've been there, finding a clean table was difficult. There were baskets and dirty plates stacked up on top of the trash cans - not a very appetizing environment.

La Luz is our absolute favorite place to have breakfast on the weekends! You won't find better Mexican breakfast items than here! It always baffles me to see all the people waiting outside for Silver Grille next door (which in my opinion has just mediocre breakfast items) when they can go to La Luz and get a table without a wait. Go for the breakfast burrito (topped with green chili, of course!), Eggs Divorcio (corn tortillas topped with eggs and green and red chili), or Migas (corn tortilla strips mixed with scrambled eggs). FYI: Breakfast is only served on weekends at the Old Town location PS (2/5): In response to another review that felt that their food was too spicy, I would have to admittedly disagree. The green and red chili have a kick, but not even close to spicy in my opinion. If you don't want a spicy breakfast, don't go to a Mexican restaurant for breakfast, or maybe just avoid the chili.

Fresh, delicious food. We had the chile rellano, chicken burrito, fish tacos and a quesadilla. Chicken was seasoned and tender, guacamole was yummy; all were satisfied with the great portions. Worth the approx 15 minute wait. Outside seating for about 8, no beer allowed outside.

La Luz never disappoints and last weekend was no exception. I can't think of a better way to end a day of tubing on the Poudre than with some tasty fish tacos and some chips & salsa. I sure with there was one in the Denver area- I have yet to find fish tacos here that are nearly as good as La Luz!

You know, the food at La Luz is pretty good, but frankly it is overshadowed by the absolute dick of an owner, Peter. I hate to resort to name calling, but this guy is a grade 'A' loser and a total misogynist. There are better choices in the area, like Big City Burrito.

Excellent food, much better than the chains and the other local fav that is run by dirty hippies. La Luz is clean and the food quality is great, don't hesitate to order something different and be ready to slip into a nice food coma after you finish one of their burritos. Also, they have great breakfast burritos but the types change every day.

  • Casey G.

  • Kate F.

    (1)
  • Chynna W.

Service was awful. Our waters were empty through our entire meal. I was never asked if I wanted a second beer when my first was emptied well before our food was served. The poorly-wrapped Atomic Del Mar burrito didn't make up for it. Will be going down the street to Illegal Pete's next time.

  • Derrick J.

  • Michelle S.

  • Brittany A.

As a San Diego native, I can't really give this place more than 3 stars. Sorry, but this is basically a healthier version of chipotle.

You know, the food at La Luz is pretty good, but frankly it is overshadowed by the absolute dick of an owner, Peter. I hate to resort to name calling, but this guy is a grade 'A' loser and a total misogynist. There are better choices in the area, like Big City Burrito.

Always happy with fresh grilled chicken quesadillas.

Excellent food, much better than the chains and the other local fav that is run by dirty hippies. La Luz is clean and the food quality is great, don't hesitate to order something different and be ready to slip into a nice food coma after you finish one of their burritos. Also, they have great breakfast burritos but the types change every day.

It may not be a fair assessment, but they only offer one rice option for their burritos and it includes cilantro IN the rice. Ugh! I HATE cilantro. Couldn't even eat there... had to leave... won't go back! If you can tolerate cilantro though (and I know there are many of you out there who can), I hear this is one of the best places in town for breakfast.

My kids really like this place... The like to get a kiddy cheese quesadilla, a bowl of roasted potatoes, or a bowl of rice & beans. I like the artists' photography (cool flower prints up right now) on the walls. I recommend eating out on the sidewalk--or at the bar seating along the windows so you can people watch.

The shrimp fajita burrito was tasty, well prepared and not heavy or greasy as some of the burritos you get in other places. The chips for the salsa were crispy and tasty, but over salted. The choices of different salsas was excellent. The prices at around $10.00 per person was fairly reasonable. Good for a quick meal, a taco or burrito, with good variety of selections in those two categories.

Awesome Mexican breakfast and by far the best fish tacos in town (Island Grille is a close 2nd!). My only complaint is that it takes a really long time to get your food. Not sure what that's all about...anyway, seriously, try the fish tacos.

Love it. Live in Phoenix but I visit Fort Collins and always come here. My favorite is the pesto burrito, but atomic and chicken potato are good too!

I like getting the veggie burritos with sour cream and guac. They're huge and flavorful, and the service is pretty quick. Best of all, I've never gotten sick here, which is more than I can say for another local burrito place...

i judge a mexican place based on two criteria: 1. whether or not they serve chile rellenos. and 2. the quality of those chile rellenos. laluz easily passed number one, and though their rellenos are not my favorite, they're still delicious and satisfied a relleno craving that i've had going on for a while now. plus, they have three very delicious types of salsa, well four including corn, but i'm not a fan of corn salsa. whatever. also my boyfriend had the pork carnitas fajita burrito and the pork was amazing. the food's pretty good, the environment is so so, but i like it a lot and keep going back.

OH YUM!! Fish tacos, YES! The BEST fish tacos I've ever had anywhere! Not some gross fried fish stick! Nice feel to the place, good lighting. I like the people behind the counter too. Would eat here every day if I had the funding!

LaLuz makes a vegetarian happy! I like the bean burrito with both black and pinto beans - both are meatless unlike other establishments that shall remain nameless. They have two locations that are equally delicious in my opinion. I kind of wish the homemade hot salsa or sauce was a little hotter but it is still very tasty. La Luz is not a chain which is nice. The staff is friendly, the cooks seem to take pride in their cooking, and prices are very reasonable.

LaLuz is the sort of local place you hope to find in areas like Old Town. It's bright and inviting, but surprisingly few people I know in Ft. Collins have been here. The downtown location is nestled right between Silver Grill and Rasta Pasta, two other notable local restaurants. Most of the food is comparable to what you would find at a Chipotle Grill or Qdoba, but with better ingredients and atmosphere. They have a larger variety of food as well. In particular, the fish tacos are wonderfully delicious and keep drawing me back. The south location has a much less vibrant atmosphere, but the food is just as good.

My last dining experience at La Luz in Old Town, a Thursday night, after waiting 40 minutes for my burrito--all the while I made eye contact with the woman from the counter several times as she brought out everyone elses' food--I went up to check on my order and they had lost my ticket. After an opaque apology I went somewhere else--any sensible place would offer to pay for the meal. The previous time I went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon and waited 35 minutes for a burrito. At La Luz you get a ticket with an order number and the time the order was placed--next time check how long your order takes. I love a fresh burrito, but why does it take more than half an hour? Time before that, I found bones in my fish tacos. And you'll notice how there is always a HELP WANTED sign in the window and the staff at the counter is always changing.

Ai yi yi yi...La Luz is D-licious. Their burritos are super. For a fantastic treat, try them on the weekends for breakfast. Their Santa Fe breakfast enchiladas are scrumptious

I have to admit, I'm an addict. Every morning that I'm in town I have one of their breakfast burritos (perfect size, instead of a big gut buster it's a reasonable size) and on the weekends they have a lot of great Meixcan breakfast items. Try the Eggsidilla

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
